Speaker: Shane Barrera
Originally from South Haven, Shane Barrera lived and worked in Kalamazoo as an HIV/STI prevention advocate before relocating to Grand Rapids (with a few years in Phoenix in between). Shane, performing as Miss Moscato, was crowned
Miss Amateur Kalamazoo 2019, Miss Amateur Red Ribbon 2019, and Kalamazoo Queen of Hearts 2020. They now perform regularly at drag shows all across the country. Shane believes that drag “brings self-confidence, especially to people in the LGBTQ community” and is a unique way to advocate for issues. They use the platform to help fight the stigma of HIV/AIDS and to support women’s rights and Black lives.
Shane Barrera, also known as Miss Moscato, will talk to us about how they came to embrace their
inner queen and why they feel that drag shows are so important to society.
