Open House Theatre Company is thrilled to announce auditions for their upcoming production of The Night Before Christmas, a heartwarming holiday play by local playwrights Deborah Ann Percy and Arnold Johnston. Auditions will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church, located at 10441 Shaver Rd in Portage, on the following dates:
- Friday, October 4: 7:00 PM
- Saturday, October 12: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

We are casting 5 children (ages 8-12), 2 older teens/young adults, and up to 10 adults. The specific roles available include:
- John, age 12
- Michael, age 8
- Maria, age 16
- Clara, age 10
- Catherine Moore (Mother), late 30s
- Clement Moore (Father), around 40
- Klaus/Santa Claus, 50s, a handyman
- Mousie, life-sized version of Michael’s stuffed toy
- Arthur, age 17, Maria’s boyfriend
- Sugar Plum, life-sized version of Clara’s doll

About the Play
The Night Before Christmas is based in part on the classic poem by Clement Clarke Moore, offering a comic and highly interactive twist on how the famous verse came to be written. Set in 1823 on the Moore family’s Manhattan estate, the play follows the Moores as they prepare a surprise for their children on Christmas Eve. The audience—especially children—is invited to participate, making this a truly engaging experience for the whole family.
Originally commissioned by Kalamazoo’s Civic Theatre in 2012, this long one-act play features imaginative elements like cows turning into reindeer, toys coming to life, young love, and festive seasonal music.
