Ms Miller writes, “There were two possibilities regarding the relationship between safety and love: 1. That a person can only feel safe if they feel loved, or 2. That safety and love are two separate concepts and that while they co-exist nicely, one does not depend on the other. I realize now that I was wrong on both counts. I also realize that it must be truly difficult, if not impossible, for a person to feel loved if they don’t feel safe. Therefore, safety must be present in a place, in a person, in a people before love can be present and that the act of making anything safe is ultimately an act of love.”
