The Indian Removal Act of 1830 resulted in many Potawatomi people in southwest Michigan being uprooted from their ancestral land, but the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians avoided forced removal by the United States Government. We will explore the ingenuity of the Potawatomi leaders at that time, and the continued importance of government to government relationships amongst sovereign Native American nations and the United States.
